The Right Address Is Critical
The egift card issuers obligation is fulfilled when digital delivery is successfulregardless of whether or not you entered the contact information correctly.
I once sent an egift card to my daughter via email. When it didnt arrive after more than an hour, I checked my purchase receipt and discovered that Id transposed a couple of letters in her email address. The issuing company graciously corrected the address and resent the gift for me, but they didnt have to. Terms and conditions on several merchants websites clearly explain that an egift transaction is complete when delivery confirmation is received. Moreover, egift cards cannot be rescinded once redeemed. Had another person opened the transposed email and claimed the gift card, I likely would have been out the entire purchase amount.
TIP: Double check email address.Double check all contact information entered when buying an egift card. Send virtual gifts with the same care you would exercise when sending money electronically such as through an electronic payment or a wire transfer.

Lost Egift Cards Are Not Lost
Physical gift cards can be purchased fairly anonymously and are difficult to replace if they get lost. But egift cards are different. These cards are typically ordered online where the buyer enters an email address, credit card number, physical address and possibly even a telephone number before completing the purchase. The recipient, who likely has to claim the code in some way, also ends up supplying contact information. With all of these identifiers, egift cards are easy to trace and replace if the recipient cant find the original notification.
TIP: Keep track of egift cards. Enter all physical and virtual gift cards into a gift card app or mobile wallet. Not only will doing so make it easier for you to present gift codes to a cashier , having all of your cards in one place will help you remember to use your gift cards.
Despite these potential problems with egift cards, weve experienced rapid improvements over the last few years. As a frequent buyer and user of digital codes, I can honestly say that processes are smoother than ever before and much of that is owed to smartphone technology. Where I used to print egift cards at home before taking them to the store, I now simply hand my phone to the cashier for payment. Though the way each cashier handles a transaction may vary , in all cases, Ive been able to use electronic cards with as much success as I enjoy when using plastic gift cards. Follow these tips and your experience should be equally positive.

How Egift Cards Work In Stores
Ive used mobile gift cards in stores multiple times without incident, but earlier this week, I broke my own rules for using egift cards and found myself unprepared.
When the cashier asked me for payment, I suddenly remembered that I had digital gift cards that I had wanted to use. So I dug through my purse to find my smartphone, which took longer than it should have. Then I blanked on where I had stored the egift cards. I could not remember if I had moved them to a mobile wallet, stored them in a gift card app, had taken screenshots of the digital codes or had planned to just pull up the email at the point of sale.
Feeling pressured by the line of shoppers stacking up behind me, I got flustered and paid for my purchase with a debit card instead of the egift cards I had intended to use. Although using egift cards in stores is easy, the process can certainly be made EASIER if you have egift cards ready to use before you actually need them. Below are my tips on how to use egift cards in stores.
Store Egift Cards Immediately
Upon receipt, copy egift card information to one, easy-to-access location. While it is great to keep the original notices in whatever form they arrived , recording the gift code, PIN and expiration date in a single place makes it easy to find your stash of digital gift cards in a hurry and gives you a backup of pertinent information in case you accidentally delete an original notice.
If you are not already using a mobile wallet, then I suggest one of the following:
Mobile Wallet on your Smartphone: I have both an iPhone and a Samsung phone. Ive stored gift cards in both, but I find the SamsungPay app easier to use. It feels more like an organization tool. Apple Pay works too. I just fumble more when I use that wallet for some reason. Either way, the easiest place to store digital gift cards is on the mobile wallet you already own.
Screenshot I often take a screenshot of the gift codes that I plan to use shortly. I love apps and wallets for getting organized and updating balances, but I can open the photo library on my phone faster than I can get into an app. I also know that I will be able to obtain the card information quickly if the stores wifi is slow or I have trouble getting a cellular connection on my phone. Having a screenshot is a good backup method too, if nothing else.

They are functionally the same as a traditional physical gift card. The only difference is digital delivery.
Cash value loaded on to a plastic gift card isnt actually on the gift card itself. Gift cards themselves dont contain the cash value loaded onto them. The gift card is just a physical token of that value.
E-gift cards take the plastic element away. Thats the only significant difference. Instead of using the gift card as the token, an email becomes the token. Everything else, functionally, remains the same for your employees and customers.
Swathes of online retailers, high street shops, leisure brands, restaurants, pubs, cinemas, experiences, holidays and more are available through e-gift cards. And, its just as easy as using traditional physical gift cards.

Refresh Egift Card Balances
While many mobile wallets and gift card apps have automatic balance update features , not all merchant cards are connected and sometimes you have to refresh a card manually in order to see if it has been used. When gift cards are completely used, remove them from your wallet. It is easier to stay organized if you are only tracking gift cards with usable dollars left on them.

Successful delivery means that the technology workedthe email got delivered, the text message went through, the post went on Facebook and so forth. Successful delivery does NOT mean that the recipient actually received the gift.
I once sent an egift card to my brother via a smartphone app. Although he received a text message from the app, he didnt recognize the sender. When he had trouble clicking the link contained in the text, he gave up and ignored it completely.
A couple of days later, I called my brother to see if he had gotten any surprises. Nope, he replied. Through further big sister questioning, I discovered that he didnt have a smartphone. I called the issuing company and they said he could access the gift through email on his computer instead. After digging through junk mail folders, spam folders and refreshing the inbox several times, he still had no gift. As it turns out, my brother has at least three email addresses. I had sent the gift to one, but he was checking the other.

How Gift Cards Work
A gift card is a form of payment that can be used to make purchases at retail stores, gas stations, restaurants, and other locations. You load money onto the card, which you or the gift cards recipient can then spend at accepted locations.
Gift cards can be open-loop or closed-loop. An open-loop gift card can be used anywhere that brand of card is accepted. For example, if you have a gift card thats branded with the Visa logo, you could use it to make purchases anywhere Visa is accepted.
A closed-loop card, on the other hand, can only be used at specific merchants. For instance, if you purchase a gift card from Starbucks or Amazon, you or the gift cards recipient would be able to use them to make purchases only at the retailer issuing the card.
Some prepaid gift cards charge a fee to purchase them. You may also pay a separate fee to reload money to a gift card if you wish to reuse it.

Prepaid Credit Cards Vs Gift Cards
When weighing the pros and cons of gift cards, its important to understand the distinction between them and prepaid debit or credit cards. Both can be used to make purchases either in stores or online, but while you might purchase gift cards to give away, a prepaid credit card is something you might use yourself for everyday spending if you dont have a bank account or would rather not pay with cash or a regular credit card.
There are several cards offered by prepaid credit card companies that offer consumers the ability to buy cards and reload them at retail locations. For example, the PayPal Prepaid MasterCard allows users to easily transfer money between their PayPal account and a physical card that can be used anywhere that MasterCard is accepted.
